Recap of Vietnam's Weather in 2026
It is worth noting that with global climate change, and Vietnam is a long and skinny country with a long coastline, the weather patterns in Vietnam in a given year may be drastically different from the norm nowadays.
1/ In January 2026, there were unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- Northern Vietnam experienced a winter with mostly dry weather and perfectly pleasant temperatures, much more like normal autumnal temperatures. There were a couple of times that the winter monsoon brought real cold temperatures in the North which lasted 3-5 days each only.
- The Central Coast of Vietnam entered dry season with sun and pleasant temperatures from the beginning of January 2026, which is very unusual. It is normal that cloudy weather persists with some light rain in the Central Coast in January and February.
- The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam experienced lowest recorded temperatures in January: 8oC and 14.3oC respectively. Saigon Ho Chi Minh City had the lowest temperature of 17oC, unusual if not never before.
- There was unseasonable and heavy rain in southern Vietnam a couple of times.
2/ In February 2026, there were unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- There were unseasonable rain in southern Vietnam alternated by days with warm temperatures.
3/ In March 2026, the unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- There was unseasonable rain in the Central Coast, the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam.
- There were strong gusts of wind which brough down houses and hails which damaged agricultural crops in Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Son La.
- There was no period of wet indoor air in Vietnam as usual in late March and beginning of April.
4/ In April 2026, the unusual weather patterns in Vietnam were:
- There was unseasonable rain in the Central Coast, in the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam. Northern Vietnam had nice weather with sun, clouds, some rain for most of the month with some spells of weak Northeasterly Wind.
Northern Vietnam did not experience moist air periods in April as normal. There was more rain in the North than normal with hails destroying crops. A bad hail destroyed crops in Son La Province.
Southern Vietnam experienced bad strong gusts of wind which destroyed serveral houses in Long An and Dong Thap Provinces.
5/ In May 2026, the unsual weather patterns in Vietnam were:
- Rainy season started later than normal in southern Vietnam (about in the third week of the month). Even with the rain of the rainy season (different from rain of transitional time between dry season and rainy season), temperatures in southern Vietnam were still high. The South experienced warm and hot temperatures for most of the month of May 2026.
- Heavy rain and floods were found in Cao Bang and Quang Ninh Provinces.
- Strong gusts of wind destroyed several tens of houses in Ca Mau Province in southern Vietnam.
6/ In June 2026, the unsual weather patterns in Vietnam were:
- Northern Vietnam experienced a spell of the Northeasterly Monsoon in the second week of June 2026. This wind is often found in Vietnam during the late autumn or in winter only. This is rare and has not been found in the country for several years.
- Heavy rain in southern Vietnam in the second week which caused aircrafts not able to land in Saigon Tan Son Nhat Airport for a while. Heavy rain in southern Vietnam was also found in the third week of June 2026 which caused streets in Saigon Ho Chi Minh City flooded temporarily.
- Northern Vietnam has hit by heat strikes in the first week, in the second week, in the third week and in the final days of June 2026. Each heat strike lasted from 2-4 days but the third and fourth heat strike in June 2026 were intense with high temperatures in Hanoi surpassing 40oC (3rd heat strike), and high temperatures in the North of the Central Coast of Vietnam surpassing 42oC (4th heat strike).
- Most of the Central Coast of Vietnam experienced high temperatures above 36oC or above 38oC for most of June 2026. The North of the Central Coast had some days with nice temperatures thanks to the unseasonable Northeasterly Monsoon. There was short-lived rain in different places in the Central Coast throughout the month.
7/ In July 2026, the unsual weather patterns or extreme weather in Vietnam were:
- Northern Vietnam experienced a very pleasant month with mild sunshine, breezes and pleasant temperatures mostly. It is not wrong to consider that Northern Vietnam entered autumn starting from the beginning of July in 2026 given the autumnal weather in the region throughout the month.
- There was more rain in the North and the North of the Central Coast more than normal.
- The Central Coast of Vietnam had hot days alternated by days with rain and tolerable or pleasant temperatures.
- Only 1 Typhoon, Typhoon No. 1 which hit Mong Cai City of Quang Ninh Province. Typhoon No. 2 did not hit Vietnam and did not have impact on the weather of the inland of Vietnam.
- Heavy rain caused floods in Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, Lai Chau, Lao Cai Provinces: The important routes No. 32 and No. 279 were flooded and partially destroyed, flash floods swept destroyed several houses and all crops in the Muong Than Valley.
- Rough sea around the Phu Quoc Island, Cu Lao Cham Island (Hoi An), and other islands in all of Vietnam.
8/ In August 2026, the unusual weather patterns and extreme weather were:
- There were two typhoons in the East Sea which did not make landfall in mainland Vietnam: No. 3 (Kujira) made its way northeastward and No. 4 made its way back and forth before traveling northward hitting China. Typhoon No. 4 caused torrential rain in northern Vietnam for 2-4 days causing floods in Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Cao Bang Provinces.
- Torrential rain caused flooded areas in Lao Cai City.
What to Expect of the Weather in Vietnam in September
Northern Vietnam may have sunny or cloudy weather with, or without rain. It may rain more or less depending on a specific year, but it is normally lovely weather in the North. The Southeasterly Monsoon should be active and blows moisture inland from the sea which causes pleasant temperatures mostly.
The Central Coast normally is normally to have cloudy or rainy weather with more likely pleasant temperatures. It is expected a rain in September lasts much longer ranging from the whole day to several days.
A typhoon in the East Sea in September is more likely to hit northern Vietnam or the North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, but the impact may be both in the North and in the Central Coast of the country. In case of a typhoon, the sea may be rough all over Vietnam and travel between the inland and the islands may be disrupted.
The Central Highlands is expected to have pleasant temperatures with daily rain.
Southern Vietnam is expected to have pleasant temperatures with daily rain.
It is the high rainy season for the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam in September and October.
For the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam, the flood season starts in September promising novel experiences to the visitors. Abundant wildlife is expected in this region this month.
For bird watchers, September is the start of the bird migratory season and several migratory bird species are expected in Vietnam. If it is not under impact of a typhoon, birdwatching is good this month.
September is not a good time for birding in the Central Coast.
September is not really a good time for birdwatching in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam, but if you bear with the rain and go birding when it stops raining, you should have fruitful birding experiences.

1/ The General weather patterns in Vietnam in September
In September, northern Vietnam has pleasant temperatures mostly. It is sun alternated by clouds and rain in the region this month.
It often happens that there may be typhoons affecting northern Vietnam in September and in which case expect rainy weather for a week and expect dangerous conditions like landslides or flash floods in the far northern mountains for 3-5 days.
In the Central Coast of Vietnam, September is the beginning of the rainy season with longer-lasting rain. A typhoon may have negative impacts on this region this month, too.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam are in the rainy season with daily heavy rain which makes bird watching inconvenient at times. Rain in these two regions could be heavy which may cause temporary violent currents in the drainage system and in streets in the Central Highlands and in cities in Binh Duong, Dong Nai Provinces (with steep terrain). Exercise caution if you happen to go traveling or birding and caught in a rain.
2/ Monsoons in Vietnam in September
The prevalent winds which affect different places in Vietnam in September:
- The Southeasterly Wind, which affects northern Vietnam, causes pleasant temperatures, moist air.
- The Westerly Monsoon is to cause dry air and warm temperatures in the Central Coast of Vietnam (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri). This month, this wind is to have a minimal impact though because there are more dominant factors at work.
- The Southwesterly Monsoon, which originates from the Equator and which is to cause daily rain in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam. The rain helps to make temperatures pleasant. The monsoon is very active in September and October, hence heavy rain in these two regions.
3/ Hot air region in the troposphere to the west and sometimes to the northwest of Vietnam in September
There is often not a hot air region in the troposphere to the west or northwest of Vietnam in September, hence not likely to have heat strikes/heat waves in the Central Coast of Vietnam and northern Vietnam this month.
4/ Air Troughs, Intertropical Convergence Zones, Storm or Tropical Depression Circulation, very Active Southwesterly Monsoon
It may rain more or less in Vietnam in September depending on which factors have more impact on each region of the country. It rains more in southern Vietnam if the Southwesterly Monsoon is more active.
It is worth noting that the Northwest of Vietnam may be under impact of the Southwesterly Wind. This wind is a foehn wind in the period of March - May. But due to often high humidity in the North of Vietnam from mid May through September that the same wind causes heavy rain to this region. This is also facilitated by the special terrain condition: the high mountain ranges in Vietnam often runs from the northwest to the southeast. The terrain creates funnel-like characteristics which facilitate the Southwesterly Wind to pressure the high humidity to the Northwest of Vietnam, hence heavy rain.
In northern Vietnam, the Southeasterly Monsoon is active which causes high humidity and frequent rain to the region. This wind causes high humidity and pleasant temperatures to most of the North. The Northeast of Vietnam often has heavy rain caused by this monsoon facilitated by the northwest-southeast mountain ranges.
It is often the case in September that the Southeasterly Monsoon and the Southwesterly Monsoon work together to push high moisture to the Northwest of Vietnam causing desastrous rain in the provinces of Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La.
It is often the case that there are air troughs and tropical convergence zones with axis over the Central Coast of Vietnam in September, this means more frequent rain, heavy rain and even long-lasting rain (for several days or weeks). But this is dependent on several climatic factors depending on a specific year.
If there is a typhoon or tropical depression in Vietnam, it is the North that is often under direct impact of one. Typhoons causes strong wind and torrential rain to the North. Heavy rain often causes floods and flash floods in the region, especially in mountainous terrain. The clockwise circulation of a storm or typhoon helps to push humidity further to the Northeast as well as the Northwest, hence often torrential rain in all of northern Vietnam in case of impact of a typhoon or tropical depression.
It is less likely but it may happen that the hot air region to the west or northwest of Vietnam's troposphere is the dominant factor, then it is high temperatures that is expected in the whole of northern Vietnam and the Central Coast of the country. But the chances of an intense heat strike or heat wave are small.

1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours
September is autumn in northern Vietnam with dry or rainy weather, some long-lasting rain but some short-lived rain, and slightly warm or more likely pleasant temperatures. September is the beginning of the trekking season in northern Vietnam. Again, it is very pleasant and beautiful weather when it is dry.
The vibe is wonderful then. This is not applicable to rainy times.
September is not a good time for trekking tours or mountain hiking trips in the Central Coast or the Central Highlands of Vietnam, because of the more likely daily rain.
Exercise extreme caution on news of a typhoon in the East Sea because typhoons nowadays often mean: flash floods, floods, landslides, rockslides, disruption of boat trips and flights between the inland and islands. A tropical depression or a typhoon is often forecast 7-10 days beforehand nowadays.
2/ Adventure Tours
The lowland of Northern Vietnam including Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh is a good place for general adventure holidays in September. Those places on high altitudes in the far-northern mountains of Vietnam with pleasant temperatures are good places for general adventures, too. But given extreme weather conditions nowadays, heavy rain may pose serious risks of flash floods and landslides/rockslides.
The Central Coast of Vietnam normally has rainy weather with pleasant temperatures in September. Still it is more often you have a good trip traveling this region this month.
In the Central Highlands, it is the high rainy season. Be vigilant about open sewer systems and flooded streets in/after the rain: fatally strong water current, electrical leakage,...
Southern Vietnam is to experience pleasant temperatures mostly. All adventure tours such as walking, cultural exploration, boat trips... are operable. And be vigilant about flooded streets after the rain.
The Mekong Delta is to enter the flood season. Flood season in the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam means abundant food choices, rich wildlife,... It lasts for a couple of months a year only and it is great.
3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours
Most migratory bird species are not present in Vietnam this month but many bird species should have arrived in the country. It is a great time to go birding in northern Vietnam provided it is not a in the rain. And it is more often that there are more beautiful days in the North than rainy days in September.
In the lowland of northern Vietnam you can watch resident birds and migratory birds at Ba Vi, Tam Dao, Xuan Son, Ba Be National Park, Cuc Phuong National Park,...
In the mountains of northern Vietnam, there are more bird species this month, but given the unstable weather conditions that it may not be worth it to go birding here this month.
Long-lasting rain in the Central Highlands and in the South of Vietnam are expected in September that requires you to make frequent breaks during birding sessions. It is not quite convenient when it rains hard and your gears get wet.
Sites for bird watching in Vietnam in September:
- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh): resident birds, most bird species are out of the period of nesting and mating time in September.
- Van Long Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh): resident and migratory storks and waterfowls.
- Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh Province : water birds, mostly some resident bird species, still a quiet time here.
- Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien-Hue Province with representatives of birds between northern and southern Vietnam. It is not recommended to visit this national park when it rains due to small and steep road from the mountain base to the national park.
- Yok Don National in Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam: among the best places in Vietnam for birding, bird watching in September.
- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : among the best places in Vietnam for birding and birdwatching tours, highly rich in endemic bird species.
- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : this is among the best places in Vietnam for birding and bird watching. Be prepared for breaks when it rains.
4/ Family Tours
Generally speaking, families should have a great time traveling in Vietnam in September given pleasant temperatures in most of the country. It is rainy season in the Central Coast, but you can still visite most tourist sites this month.
5/ Island Holidays
September is not a good time to make trips to the islands in Vietnam. The reason is that though sea exploration tours are to be operational, but rough sea may cause change of itineraries.
In case of a typhoon, expect traffic disruption for boats and flights between the inland and the islands of Vietnam.
6/ Beach Vacations
September is not a good time for beach holidays in northern Vietnam and the Central Coast of Vietnam, in the South of the Central Coast of Vietnam, and in southern Vietnam. The only good thing is that beaches in Vietnam are quiet in September as school holidays are over and Vietnamese families do not travel much this month.
In Northern Vietnam and North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, Sam Son Beach, Cua Lo Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam are good choices.
And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have mostly rainy weather, and with pleasant temperatures : Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Ninh Chu, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet.
If you travel to Southern Vietnam in September, then try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You should have pleasant temperatures mostly.
