Vietnam Weather in March 2024

March is spring in Northern Vietnam, is the dry season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Coast, is the the dry season in the Central Highlands, and in Southern Vietnam. 

The North of Vietnam generally enjoys pleasant temperatures mostly, with high moiture in the air and/or light rain sometimes in March. The Central Coast of Vietnam has mostly pleasant temperatures with some cloudy days and some warm days. 

The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam are in the dry season. The temperatures in the Central Highlands are pleasant mostly, while those in Southern Vietnam are mostly warm and hot. In fact, March and April are the hottest months in southern Vietnam.

General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in March

The Northeasterly Wind is the prevalent wind which affects all of Vietnam’s sea areas in March. and most of Vietnam’s inland regions in March.

Most of the North of Vietnam is to have prevalent Northeasterly Wind :
- If the wind blows along the coast before hitting northern Vietnam, then there may be drizzle in Northern Vietnam with pleasant or cool temperatures ;
- If the wind blows mostly through the continent, then it is dry weather with mild sunshine in the North ; the mountainous regions turn chilly.

In March, the Northeasterly Monsoon oftens blows more inland from the sea at the end of each spell, hence moist air and fog in the lowland of the North for a few days. The temperatures are mostly pleasant in most of the North in March.

Part of Northwest of Vietnam including Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Hoa Binh may be under impact of the Westerly Wind, which is a foehn wind blowing from Laos. The wind causes dry air and warm or hot temperatures.

The Central Coast of Vietnam is under impact of a Westerly Wind, which is a foehn wind and which causes dry air and sometimes warm or hot temperatures, especially in Quang Binh and part of Quang Tri Province. The South of the Central Coast is to have sunshine with pleasant temperatures mostly.

The Central Highland is under the influence of the Southwesterly Wind which comes from the Bengal Bay and which causes dry air. This is the dry season with strong sun in the Central Highlands. Thanks to high altitude that most places are to have pleasant temperatures. Some places on low altitudes may experience warm temperatures at mid day.

The South of Vietnam shares the same wind with  the Central Highlands of Vietnam. And it is trong sun along with hot temperatures mostly in the region.

1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours

March is generally a very good time for adventure tours in Northern Vietnam given that the temperatures are mostly pleasant, and it is dry most of the time in March in the far northern regions of the country.

Those who travel in the lowland of Northern Vietnam may experience some drizzle which may last for a couple of days each time a new spell of the Northeasterly Wind arrives. It may get foggy and the air may be with high humidity in the North in March.

Those embark on mountain hiking trekking tours are to be awarded with beautiful clouds on high mountain peaks. On several mountains in Yen Bai, Lao Cai and Lai Chau, it is the time when rhododendron forest yields stunning blossoms !

March is a fabulous time for hiking tours in the Central Highlands given it is the dry season here. Expect bright sunshine and excellent temperatures of 20-30oC most of the month.

2/ Adventure Tours

Northern Vietnam is a great place for general adventure tours in March given dry weather mostly and pleasant temperatures always.

Most places in the Central Coast of Vietnam are to enjoy dry weather with pleasant temperatures for the month in March. It may get hot in Quang Binh and Quang Tri Provinces at times.

In the Central Highlands, it is among the best times of the year for adventure tours with mostly dry weather, bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures. The temperatures may get warm in places on low altitudes below 600-700m above sea level.

Southern Vietnam is to experience the hottest time of the year with strong sun. Avoid taking outdoor adventures in this region at mid day.

3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours

March is still the migration time that several migratory bird species have been present in national parks and nature reserves in Vietnam, and bird parks in the country are vivid with wildlife. This is among the best times for birding in Vietnam. Some bird species start a return migratory journey from the third week of March given the temperatures are building up fast in Vietnam.

Birding sites in Vietnam in March :

- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) : : resident birds and migratory bird species.

- Van Long Nature Reserve  (Ninh Binh): storks and water fowls.

- Bach Ma National Park (Thua Thien – Hue) : This is among the region with the top annual rainfalls in Vietnam and it is the end of the rainy season.

- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : Birding at Da Lat and other sites in Lam Dong Province is a great experience in March.

- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : March is a great time for birdwatching at Cat Tien National Park.

4/ Family Tours

Generally speaking, families should have a good time traveling in Vietnam in March. Your family may like to take a family adventure in the far north, or a sightseeing family holiday in the lowland of the North, or a family beach vacation in Southern Vietnam... , then you are to have a wonderful time. Your family should enjoy a great vacation also in most places in the Central Coast of Vietnam.

5/ Island Holidays

The Northeasterly Wind causes rough sea all over Vietnam in March. Though you may have lovely dry weather with perfect temperatures, but the sea is quite rough for sea exploration tours, boat trips, snorkeling trips, scuba diving tours... If you accept these facts, then you can have good time on the islands : Co To Island and Quan Lan Island (Quang Ninh Province), Cat Ba Island (Hai Phong), Con Dao Islands (Ba Ria-Vung Tau), Phu Quy Island in Binh Thuan , Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang).

6/ Beach Vacations

In Northern Vietnam, Sam Son Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam have rough sea mostly.

And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have cloudy or sunny weather mostly with pleasant temperatures.

If you travel to Southern Vietnam then you may try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You can have pleasant temperatures mostly with beautifully bright sunshine.

First week of March, 2024

The first week of March 2024 found the North of Vietnam with some drizzle, but mostly clouds, moist air.

The Central Coast of Vietnam had dry weather with pleasant or warm temperatures.

The Central Highlands of Vietnam had dry weather with pleasant temperatures mostly and warm temperatures in places on low altitudes.

The South of Vietnam continued to have hot weather with daily temperare highs of 36-37oC.

There were days that cities in Southern Vietnam got warm at mid day.

Regional weather at the beginning of the first week of March 2024 was as follows :

- Northeast : sun, clouds, isolated rain, 11-28oC;

- Northwest : sun, clouds, 13-27oC in Hoa Binh , Yen Bai, 14-31oC in Lao Cai ; sun, 13-32oC in Son La, Dien Bien, 11-26oC in Lai Chau ;

- Lowlands in Northern Vietnam : fog, moist air, clouds, isolated rain, 15-27/16-30oC ;

- North of the Central Coast : sun, clouds, 17-32oC ;

- Mid Central Coast to the north of Hai Van : sun, clouds, 18-36oC in Quang Binh and Quang Tri, 21-32oC in Hue;

- Mid Central Coast to the south of Hai Van : sun, clouds, 23-32oC ;

- South Central Coast  (Quy Nhon – Nha Trang): sun, clouds, 24-32oC ;

- South Central Coast ( Ninh Thuan, Phan Rang-Thap Cham): sun, clouds, 25-32oC ;

- South Central Coast ( Binh Thuan, Phan Thiet Mui Ne): sun, clouds, 25-31oC ;

- Central Highlands : sun, clouds, 20-36oC ;

At the end of the first week of March 2024, there was a heat strike in the Central Coast with high temperatures from 36-39oC in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue. The commonly found high daily temperatures in Southern Vietnam were 36-37oC.

Second week of March, 2024

In the second week of March 2024 there was a new spell of the cold Northeasterly Wind which caused cool or cold temperatures, and dry weather mostly, some isolated rain in Northern Vietnam. 

Regional weather at the beginning of the second week of March was as follows :
- Northeast :  clouds, isolated rain, 12-18oC;
- Northwest :  sun, clouds, isolated rain, 14/15-20oC in Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai; sun, clouds, some isolated rain, 15-24/14-28/12-21oC in Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau;
- Lowlands in Northern Vietnam : sun, clouds, isolated rain, 15-28oC ;
- North of the Central Coast : sun, clouds, some isolated rain, 16-21oC ;

- Mid Central Coast to the north of Hai Van : some clouds, rain, 20-23/27oC in Quang Binh, Hue and Quang Tri ;
- Mid Central Coast to the south of Hai Van (Da Nang to Quang Ngai) : sun, clouds, 22-27/29oC ;
- South Central Coast  (Quy Nhon – Nha Trang): sun, clouds, 24-29/30oC ;
- South Central Coast ( Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet: sun, clouds, 24-32/31oC;

- Central Highlands :  sun, clouds, 20-33oC mostly, 19-36oC in Kon Tum ;

There was brief drizzle in the morning on the last 02 days in Northern Vietnam in the second week of March, 2024.

Third week of March, 2024

In the third week of March 2024, Northern Vietnam continued with drizzle and moist air which had started in the last 2 days of the second week.

The Central Coast of Vietnam had some rain to the north of the Hai Van Pass, mostly pleasant temperatures in the region.
The Central Highlands have pleasant temperatures mostly, hot temperatures in places on low altitudes.
Southern Vietnam had a drought and hot temperatures of 36-38oC.

The regional weather was as follows:
- Northeast : clouds, some isolated rain, 14-24oC ;
- Northwest : sun, clouds, some rain, 19-26oC in Hoa Binh, Yen Bai , Lao Cai ; sun, clouds, 17-33oC Son La and Dien Bien, 16-28oC in Lai Chau ;
- Lowlands in Northern Vietnam : light rain, 21-26oC ;

- North of the Central Coast : clouds, some light rain, 21-24/27oC ;
- Mid Central Coast to the north of Hai Van : sun and clouds, some isolated light rain, 22-30/21-29oC ;
- Mid Central Coast to the south of Hai Van : sun, clouds, 22-28/31oC ;

- South Central Coast  (Quy Nhon – Nha Trang):  sun or clouds, 23-30/24-31oC ;
- South Central Coast ( Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet Mui Ne ) : sun, clouds, 23-32/24-31oC ;

- Central Highlands : sun, clouds, 18-37/19-35oC ;

- East of Southern Vietnam (Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai) : sun, clouds, 26-36oC ;
- West of Southern Vietnam (Mekong Delta) : sun, clouds, 24-36oC.

There was a new spell of Northeasterly Wind in North and North of the Central Coast of Vietnam on 18 and 19-March which caused the first showers in several places in 2024. The rainfalls measured in 12 hours from 19:00 hours of 18-March: Lục Ngạn (Bắc Giang) 94.0mm, Tp. Bắc Ninh 66.6mm, Thanh Lương (Hà Nội) 62.6mm, Lạc Sỹ (Hòa Bình) 52.9mm, Văn Lăng (Thái Nguyên) 51.2mm, Tp. Nam Định 51.0mm,…

Thanks to the cool wind that the indoor air in the Red River Delta turned dry and comfortable again; the region had had 1 week with moist indoor air.

Fourth week and last days of March, 2024

At the beginning of the fourth week and last days of March 2024, the North had perfect weather for a day. Then drizzle came again.

The Central Coast continued to have mostly sun and clouds with lovely temperatures. So did most of the the Central Highlands.

Southern Vietnam continued to have hot temperatures with daily highs of 36-37oC.

- North of the Central Coast:  sun, clouds, rain 22-30oC ;
- Mid Central Coast to the north of Hai Van : sun, clouds, isolated rain, 23-32/29oC ;
- Mid Central Coast to the south of Hai Van: sun, clouds, 24-29/23-32oC ;

- South Central Coast  (Quy Nhon – Nha Trang): sun, clouds, 24-32oC ;

At the end of the month, there were hails in several places in Vietnam: Son La, Yên Bái, Hà Giang, Phú Thọ, Da Lat.

At the end of March 2024, there was a brief heat strike in several places in the Central Coast, on low altitude in the Central Highlands, and in Southern Vietnam. Places with high temperatures recorded on 31-March-2024:  Sông Mã (Sơn La) 38.8oC, Phù Yên (Sơn La) 39.5oC, Mai Châu (Hòa Bình) 39.2oC, Đô Lương (Nghệ An) 39.2oC, Hương Khê (Hà Tĩnh) 38.6oC, Đồng Hới (Quảng Bình) 39.2oC, Tuyên Hóa (Quảng Bình) 39.1oC, Đông Hà (Quảng Trị) 38.6oC,..

Rainfalls measured in 3 hours (13:00 to 16:00 of 31-March-2024): Kbang 86,8mm (Gia Lai); Tân Hà-Lâm Hà 74,4mm, Hoài Đức-Lâm Hà 72mm (Lâm Đồng);
