The Kon Ka Kinh National Park is 50km northeast of Pleiku City, part of the Truong Son Mountain Range. The national park stretches over the territory of Kbang, Dak Doa and Mang Yang Districts of Gia Lai Province. The total area of the national park is nearly 42,000 hectares.

Geography

The Kon Ka Kinh National Park is situated in the area of the Pleiku Plateau and Kon Ha Nung Plateau with the elevation of 600-1,748m above sea level. The peak of these mountains is the Kon Ka Kinh Mountain after which the national park is named.

The terrain of Kon Ka Kinh is higher to the north and lower to the south. Over 98% of the national park is on 700-1700m altitude.

The Kon Ka Kinh National Park is where some rivers in the Central Highlands and the Central Coast of Vietnam start:

- The Ba River starts its course from the North of the National Park at Dak Roong Commune, flowing 11km north-south through the national park. This is a big river flowing through Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Phu Yen. The river discharges its water into the sea at Tuy Hoa City (Phu Yen Province). The river is named Ea Pa or Ia Pa in the highlands, and Da Rang in the lowlands.

- Dak Pne River starts its course at the Dak Pne Commune, western slope of the Kon Ka Kinh Mountain. The river flows northwards merging with the Dak Bla River at Kon Plong District (Kon Tum Province). The Dak Bla flows through Kon Tum City merging with the Po Ko River and this is the water source for the hydro-power plants of Ya Ly and Se San.

- A Yun River starts its course from the south of the Kon Ka Kinh National Park. The A Yun merges with the Ba River at A Yun Pa Town (Gia Lai Province).

Climate

The Kon Ka Kinh has a tropical monsoon climate with high altitude influence. The rainy season is from May through November and the dry season is from December through April. The averaged temperatures range from 21-25oC, the averaged humidity is 80% and annual rainfall is 2000-2,500mm.

The Kon Ka Kinh is home to 687 vascular plant species, 428 fauna species including 42 animal species, 130 bird species, 51 reptile and amphibian species, 205 butterfly species.

1/ H’ngoi Waterfall

2/ Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is close to the entrance with representatives of different plants in the national park.

3/ Wildlife Rescue Center

From the entrance it takes 1 hour through a forest trail to the Wildlife Rescue Center where there are rescued animals are kept in semi-wildlife environment.

4/ White Rock Peak

The White Rock Peak is 1,400m above sea level. The trail goes from the entrance to the Wildlife Rescue Center for 1 hour then it takes 2 more hours to get to the White Rock Peak. This spot is ideal for watching gray-shanked douc langurs which are endemic to Vietnam.

5/ The 5-leave Pine Tree

The distance from the entrance to the 5-Leave Pine Tree is 10km and it takes 1 night at the Wildlife Research Center. From the center it takes 3 hours to hike up to 1,500m where the pine tree is. This spot offers great views of a 3-tier waterfall (25m high), wildlife including gray-shanked langurs, pheasants, monkeys, wild boars…

6/ Kon Bong Waterfall

The Kon Bong Waterfall is in Kon Bong Village (Bahnar People), Dak Rong Commune, the buffer zone of Kon Ka Kinh, 150km from the visitor center of the national park.

7/ 95 Waterfall

The 95 Waterfall is in Dak Jo Ta Commune, Mang Yang District, 30 minute by car from the Visitor Center of the Kon Ka Kinh National Park. From where the car stops to the base of the waterfall it is 15km through forest. The waterfall is 45m high and at the base there is a huge lake with charming opportunities for swimming and relaxing.

8/ Peak of Kon Ka Kinh

The Peak of Kon Ka Kinh is 1,748m above sea level. The trekking tour starts at Dak Hro Village (Dak Rong Commune, Kbang District ) - the base of the mountain which is 130km from the Visitor Center of the Kon Ka Kinh National Park. The trekking trail is 20km which goes through humid dense rain forest. The hike requires good physical exertion and suitable to experienced trekkers only.

How to get there

The road from Pleiku to the Kon Ka Kinh National Park is 50km which takes 1 hour and a half. The road conditions are fine during the dry season and not so good during the rainy season. The only means of transport is by private vehicle.
