Vietnam Weather in August 2023

August is between summer and autumn in Northern Vietnam, about the end of the hot season and about to be the beginning of the rainy season in the Central Coast, rainy season in the Central Highlands, and in Southern Vietnam.

The temperatures tend to be pleasant in most of Vietnam in August. And it tends to rain more in the far northern mountains, in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.

General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in August

All of the North of Vietnam is to have more active Southeasterly Wind which brings inland moisture, hence more rain and more pleasant temperatures in the whole region. The Northwest is not to come under the influence of the foehn wind anymore. There are occasional typhoons to the North which may cause incessant an torrential rain to the region which may pose serious threats of landslides, rockslides and flashfloods in the mountains.

The Central Coast of Vietnam often has high temperatures and strong sun in August. The region is still under heat strikes most of the time due to foehn wind which is the result of the active Southwesterly Wind in August. High temperatures in the areas may reach 36-38oC.

The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam come under influence of the Southwesterly Wind coming from the Equator. The wind causes daily rain. The rain often causes temporary floods in cities which disrupt traffic. In the Central Highlands, heavy rain may pose serious threats of flash floods and landslides. The temperatures in the Central Highlands are often very pleasant (21-31oC) and those in Southern Vietnam are pleasant (26-33oC thanks to the wind and the rain.

Adventure Travel, Nature tours, Bird Watching Tours in Vietnam in August

August is generally not a good time for adventure tours, bird watching tours in Vietnam. This is because of high rainfalls in the North, in the Central Highlands and in Southern Vietnam. Heavy and continual rain makes forest trails, nature trails muddy for motorcycle trips, bike tours or trekking tours.

The Central Coast of Vietnam often undergoes continual heat strikes in August with high temperatures, dry and still air, and strong sun. If you go on beach vacations in the Central Coast of Vietnam, then you can have some good time. The same for those on photography tours in this region.

Those who plan for adventure holidays or trekking tours in Sapa are to have rain mostly and cool temperatures. The trails are muddy and slippery. The same is applied to cities in the Central Highlands : Kon Tum, Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot and Da Lat. The Dong Van Rock Plateau in Ha Giang may have some nice days without rain and the temperatures range from cool to cold.

Hoa Binh, Mai Chau and Ninh Binh are to have more days with beautiful weather as autumn is just coming.

August is the time that most migratory bird species are not present in national parks and nature reserves in Vietnam, and bird parks in the country are not busy with wildlife. But the resident birds are more active than in July and June. And you may have some good birding trips in August in Vietnam : Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh), Xuan Thuy National Park (Nam Dinh), Van Long Nature Reserve in Ninh Binh, Ba Be National Park (Bac Kan).

In August, birds are also more active in national parks in the Mekkong Delta (Tram Chim, Bac Lieu, Thap Muoi, Lang Sen...) in Southern Vietnam.

Those birders who travel into the Central Highlands may find better luck at Da Lat (the Tuyen Lam Lake, Lang Biang Mountain, Ta Nung Valley) or at the Yok Don National Park (near Buon Ma Thuot). But again, it rains more in the Central Highlands than in Northern Vietnam during this time.

You and your family are likely to have great time on island holidays in Northern Vietnam in August given the pleasant temperatures. But planning for these vacations far in advance may be tricky, as there may be typhoons or tropical depression hitting Northern Vietnam in August. Nowadays, typhoons can be foreseen from 10 days to 2 weeks in advance.

There are days with rain and several nice days in August on the offshore islands in Southern Vietnam : Phu Quoc Island, Con Dao Islands. The weather should be great with lovely sunshine and nice temperatures on the islands in the Central Region of Vietnam : Cu Lao Cham (Hoi An, Quang Nam), Ly Son (Quang Ngai), Phu Quy Island (Binh Thuan).
