April is spring in Northern Vietnam, is the dry season with hot temperatures in the Central Coast, is the the dry season with pleasant or hot temperatures in the Central Highlands, and dry season and hot temperatures in Southern Vietnam.
The North of Vietnam generally enjoys pleasant temperatures (24-31oC) alternated by some days with slightly warm temperatures (35-36oC), with high moiture in the air and/or light rain sometimes in April. The Central Coast of Vietnam has mostly pleasant temperatures with some cloudy days and some warm days.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam are in the dry season. The temperatures in the Central Highlands are pleasant mostly and warm in places on low altitude, while those in Southern Vietnam are mostly hot. In fact, March and April are the hottest months in southern Vietnam.
General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in April
The prevalent winds which affects different places in Vietnam in April :
- The Southeasterly Wind in most of northern Vietnam : humid and pleasant temperatures.
- The Westerly Wind (foehn wind) in part of the Northweast of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lao Cai), in most of the Central Coast of Vietnam from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen: dry air and hot temperatures.
- The Southwesterly Wind from the Bengal Bay (foehn wind) in the Central Highlands (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong) and Southern Vietnam (Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Saigon Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh...), and in the Mekong Delta.
It is possible that there are spells of weak Northeasterly Wind which often makes the temperatures in most of Northern Vietnam very pleasant (20-3oC).

1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours
April is generally a very good time for adventure tours in Northern Vietnam given that the temperatures are mostly pleasant, and it is dry most of the time in April in the far northern regions of the country.
Those who travel in the lowland of Northern Vietnam is awarded with pleasant temperatures and mild sunshine mostly.
On several mountains in Yen Bai, Lao Cai and Lai Chau, it is the time when rhododendron forest yields stunning blossoms! It is the season of mountain ebony flowers which are beautiful and which have beautiful fragrance.
April is a fabulous time for hiking tours in the Central Highlands given it is the dry season here and high altitudes. Expect bright sunshine and excellent temperatures of 20-30oC most of the month. Some places on high altitudes are to have hot temperatures but it is more likely that tourists don’t make their trips here.
2/ Adventure Tours
Northern Vietnam is a great place for general adventure tours in April given dry weather mostly and pleasant temperatures always.
Most places in the Central Coast of Vietnam are to enjoy dry weather with pleasant temperatures for the month in April. It may get hot in Quang Binh and Quang Tri Provinces at times.
In the Central Highlands, it is among the best times of the year for adventure tours with mostly dry weather, bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures. The temperatures may get warm in places on low altitudes below 600-700m above sea level.
Southern Vietnam is to experience the hottest time of the year with strong sun. Avoid taking outdoor adventures in this region at mid day.
3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours
April is among the best times for birding trips in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. April is not the best time for bird-watching tours in Northern Vietnam ; you are more likely to have nice birding time at Cuc Phuong National Park and Van Long Wetland Reserve though.
Birding sites in Vietnam in April :
- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) : : resident birds mostly.
- Van Long Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh): storks and waterfowls.
- Bach Ma National Park (Thua Thien – Hue) : This is among the region with the top annual rainfalls in Vietnam and it is the end of the rainy season, April is the best time birding at Bach Ma National Park.
- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : Birding at Da Lat and other sites in Lam Dong Province is a great experience in April.
- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : April is a great time for bird watching at Cat Tien National Park.
4/ Family Tours
Generally speaking, families should have a good time traveling in Vietnam in April. Your family may like to take a family adventure in the far north, or a sightseeing family holiday in the lowland of the North, or a family beach vacation in Southern Vietnam... , then you are to have a wonderful time. Your family should enjoy a great vacation also in most places in the Central Coast of Vietnam.
If you plan to visit cities in Southern Vietnam or in the Mekong Delta, then be prepared with strong sunshine and hot temperatures.
5/ Island Holidays
April is the best time for island holidays all over Vietnam given pleasant temperaures, beautiful sunshine always. The sea is mostly calm all over the country and water sports as welll as sea exploration tours are operational... For the best island vacations, you may want to consider these: Co To Island and Quan Lan Island (Quang Ninh Province), Cat Ba Island (Hai Phong), Ly Son Island (Quang Ngai), Phu Quy Island (Binh Thuan), Con Dao Islands (Ba Ria-Vung Tau), Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang).
6/ Beach Vacations
In Northern Vietnam, Sam Son Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam have calm sea and pleasant temperatures with lovely sunshine mostly.
And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have sunny weather mostly with pleasant or sometimes warm temperatures.
If you travel to Southern Vietnam then you may try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You can have pleasant temperatures mostly with beautifully bright sunshine.

The first week of April 2024 found the North of Vietnam with the first heat wave of 2024 with high temperatures in several places reaching 36-37oC.

At the end of the first week and at the beginning of the second week of April 2024 there were a few spells of the Northeasterly Wind which caused pleasant temperatures and some isolated rain in Northern Vietnam.
The Central Coast had mostly pleasant temperatures, some places had hot temperatures with highs of 35-37oC.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam had hot temperatures with highs reaching 37-39oC.

Third week of April, 2024
At the end of the third week and beginning of the third week of April 2024, part of Northern Vietnam recieved some spells of weak Northeasterly Wind which caused some light drizzle in the evening and early morning and which made the temperatures very pleasant.
Part of the Northwest of Vietnam including Hoa Binh, Son La and Dien Bien came under the influence of the foehn wind from Laos (Laos wind) and the air trough in the atmosphere over the west of Vietnam, hence hot temperatures. The same weather pattern wass found in part of the Central Coast, in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.

Fourth week and last days of April, 2024
At the end of the third week and beginning of the fourth week of April 2024, the North had sudden change of weather from pleasant temperatures to hot temperatures followed by heavy rain with strong gusts of wind which felled down several trees in Hanoi and neighboring provinces. Besides, hails were found in several places including Hanoi and Hoa Binh.
The Northwest of Vietnam, the Central Coast, the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam had hot temperatures surpassing 36-37oC.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam had been undergoing a serious drought.

There were more weak spells of the Northeasterly Wind in mid of the third decade of April 2024 which caused rain in part of northern Vietnam. Most of the North continued to have pleasant temperatures; part of the Northwest had a couple of days with rain and pleasant temperatures thanks to the rain. After the impact of the Northeasterly Wind, the Northwest had hot temperatures again.
