Vietnam Weather in December 2022

December is cold winter time in northern of Vietnam, is the rainy season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, about to be the beginning of the dry season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.

The Northeasterly prevails blowing hard through northern Vietnam causing dry and cold weather. The same wind causes rain and cool temperatures in the Central Coast of Vietnam and rough sea all over Vietnam including the sea around the Con Dao Islands and Phu Quoc Island.

The Northeasterly Wind makes temperatures in the Central Highlands and South Vietnam pleasant.

First week of December, 2022

Winter started as December begun which is not normal for northern Vietnam weather patterns. It is usual that winter start in mid November. Given that the first spell of Northeasterly Wind in 2022 came to the North was 10-October-2022 which was over 1 month earlier than normal.

Some rain was found in Northern Vietnam as the Winter Monsoon set in but mostly it was light rain. It was mostly brisk weather in all of Northern Vietnam with lovely mild sunshine. The temperatures in the North was 16-22oC in the lowlands and 3-5oC lower in the mountains.

The Northeasterly Wind in December 2022 caused heavy rain with rainfall over 100mm within 24 hours on the first – second days found at: Huong Phu – Thua Thien Hue (314mm), Ron Reservoir – Quang Nam (610mm), Gia Vuc – Quang Ngai (219mm),  Canh Liên 135mm (Bình Định), Sông Hinh 183mm (Phú Yên), Khánh Hiệp 160mm (Khánh Hòa); XÃ Hiếu 260mm (Kon Tum); Ea Pil 148mm (Đắk Lắk).…

The temperatures were 
+ 22-24oC in the Central Coast north to the Hai Van Pass,
+ 24-27oC in the Central Coast south to the Hai Van Pass,
+ 23-30oC south of the Central Coast (Nha Trang to Binh Thuan),
+ 19-27oC in the Central Highlands,
+ 24-28oC in Southern Vietnam,
+ 24-32oC in Ho Chi Minh City,

Torrential rain at the Bach Ma National Park caused some parts of Route 1A flooded at Phu Loc – Thua Thien Hue Province.

There was a strengthened spell of the Winter Monsoon at mid week sending temperatures lower in northern Vietnam. It was 14-19oC in the lowlands and 4-5oC lower in the mountain.

The strengthened wind caused rough sea all over Vietnam and heavy rain in the Central Coast and south of the Central Highlands.

- Quang Nam: Đồng Tiến 231,1mm, 
- Khanh Hoa: Đập Kiêu – Hoa Sơn 167,6mm
- Dak Lak: Thôn 10 Xa Ea MDoal 143,2mm, 
- Binh Dinh: Cát Tiên 112,4mm.

The temperatures remained slightly the same throughout the week in the Central Coast, Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.

Second week of December, 2022

The second week of December 2022, the North of Vietnam had windy days with overcast skies, cold temperatures.

The Central Coast of Vietnam had rain mostly from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa.
- Hải An 147,6mm (Quảng Trị); Thao Long 200mm (Thừa Thiên Huế); 
- Ba Điền 129,4mm, Minh Long 106,4mm (Quảng Ngãi); 
- Phù Cát 138,6mm (Bình Định); 
- Lưu Vực Xuân Lộc 106,8mm (Phú Yên); 
- Dap Kieu-Hoa Son 124,2mm (Khánh Hòa); 
- Vĩnh Hải 75,8mm (Ninh Thuận); 

The Central Highlands had some rain alternated by cloudy skies.
- Pờ Ê 75,2mm (Kon Tum); 
- Thôn 10 Xã Ea M Doal 128,2mm (Đăk Lăk).

The South of Vietnam had some rain and overcast skies mostly.

The temperatures were 
+ 16-19oC in the lowland and 2-3oC lower in the mountains in Northern Vietnam,
+ 16-19oC in the North of the Central Coast,
+ 20-24oC in the Central Coast north to the Hai Van Pass,
+ 21-26oC in the Central Coast south to the Hai Van Pass,
+ 22-28oC south of the Central Coast (Nha Trang to Binh Thuan),
+ 20-28oC in the Central Highlands,
+ 23-30oC in Southern Vietnam,
+ 24-32oC in Ho Chi Minh City.

A strengthening spell of the Northeasterly Monsoon at mid week brought brief night rain to the North for a night, and caused heavy rain in the Mid of the Central Coast.

Third week of December, 2022

A strengthening spell of the Northeasterly Wind brought temperatures in the North to a much lower level. It was strong winds, mild sunshine and lovely brisk weather all over Northern Vietnam. 

The strengthening wind caused rain in the Central Coast and rough sea all over Vietnam.

It was beautiful mild sunshine and lovely temperatures in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.

The regional weather and temperatures were
+ The North: 6-19oC in the far northern mountains, 9-20oC in the lowlands;
+ North of the Central Coast: 11-18oC, some rain and some sunshine;
+ Central Coast: some clouds, mostly rain; 14-19oC to the north of the Hai Van Pass, 18-23oC to the south of the Hai Van Pass, 3-5oC higher going south from Quy Nhon to Phan Thiet – Mui Ne;
+ Central Highlands: lovely mild sunshine, 16-25oC;
+ South of Vietnam: lovely sunshine, 21-30oc mostly, 22-31oC in Ho Chi Minh.

In mid of the third week of December 2022, there was a strong spell of the Winter Monsoon which caused heavy rain in the mid of the Central Coast from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai. The strong wind caused rough sea waves all over the country. Several flights to and from the Phu Quoc Island, Con Dao Islands (Con Son Island) and Tuy Hoa City (Phu Yen Province) were canceled due to strong winds and bad weather.

Fourth week and last days of December, 2022

Beginning of the fourth week, there was another strengthening spell of the Northeasterly Wind hitting the North of Vietnam. Frost was found in high mountain peaks in the Northwest of the country. The North remained cold with beautiful sunshine. The wind caused some light rain in the mid of the Central Coast and chilly days in southern Vietnam.

The dry season has started in the Central Highlands and in the South of Vietnam. 

The temperatures were

+ The North: 9-22oC in the far northern mountains, 12-24oC in the lowlands;
+ North of the Central Coast: 13-23oC, some rain to the southern area and sunshine in northern area;
+ Central Coast: some clouds, mostly rain; 17-21oC to the north of the Hai Van Pass, 19-24oC to the south of the Hai Van Pass, 2-5oC higher going south from Quy Nhon to Phan Thiet – Mui Ne;
+ Central Highlands: lovely mild sunshine, 13-24oC;
+ South of Vietnam: lovely sunshine, 19-29oc mostly, 20-31oC in Ho Chi Minh.

South of Vietnam enjoyed chilly days at the end of the year. The temperatures got down to 19oC at Christmas.

A cold spell of the Winter Monsoon hit Vietnam on 27 and 28-December bringing the temperatures in some regions to new low levels. The North had some brief rain for half a day after hit by the wind. The Central Coast had rain. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had beautiful sunshine, breezes and lovely temperatures.
