It is worth noting that with global climate change, and Vietnam is a long and skinny country with a long coastline, the weather patterns in Vietnam in a given year may be drastically different from the norm nowadays.
2026 passed with lot of unusual weather patterns that you may want to refer to our January weather review.
In January 2026, there were unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- Northern Vietnam experienced a winter with mostly dry weather and perfectly pleasant temperatures, much more like normal autumnal temperatures. There were a couple of times that the winter monsoon brought real cold temperatures in the North which lasted 3-5 days each only.
- The Central Coast of Vietnam entered dry season with sun and pleasant temperatures from the beginning of January 2026, which is very unusual. It is normal that cloudy weather persists with some light rain in the Central Coast in January and February.
- The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam experienced lowest recorded temperatures in January: 8oC and 14.3oC respectively. Saigon Ho Chi Minh City had the lowest temperature of 17oC, unusual if not never before.
- There was unseasonal and heavy rain in southern Vietnam a couple of times.
In February 2026, there were unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- There were unseasonal rain in southern Vietnam alternated by days with warm temperatures.
In March 2026, the unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- There was unseasonal rain in the Central Coast, the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam.
- There were strong gusts of wind which brough down houses and hails which damaged agricultural crops in Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Son La.
What to Expect of the Weather in Vietnam in April
Northern Vietnam often has dry weather with pleasant temperatures. It may be possible that the lowland of northern Vietnam has moist air for the first week or 10 days of April. It is because there are days that either the Northeasterly Monsoon tends to blow along the coast to Vietnam, or because the Southeasterly Monsoon suddenly becomes active and blow inland from the sea. But it is normal that the North enjoys mild sun, dry weather with some breezes and mostly pleasant temperatures in the month.
The Central Coast normally is in the dry season with sun mostly: some areas are with pleasant temperatures and some other regions have warm or hot temperatures.
The Central Highlands is expected to have dry weather with pleasant temperatures.
Southern Vietnam is expected to have dry weather with warm or hot temperatures.
For bird watchers, April is a good time for birding in Vietnam. But it is worth noting that several water bird species will have started returning to their resident places in April which makes some wetland reserves quiet.
The Central Coast enjoys brief period that is perfect for watching birds.
The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam are also great places for watching birds in April. But there are days that the temperatures may get quite warm or hot at mid day in southern Vietnam that makes it really quiet and bird-watchers are advised to have a mid day break.
Generally speaking, there are not many migratory birds in Vietnam in April. But given that it is dry all over the country that bird watchers should have a good time birding in all over Vietnam.

In April, northern Vietnam has mostly pleasant temperatures. It is more likely dry in this region this month. For the first 7 days of April, it may be possible that there is fog and hoist air in the lowland of northern Vietnam.
In the Central Coast of Vietnam, April is the dry season with pleasant or warm temperatures. It is normal to have clouds and sun for the whole month.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam are in the dry season in April. The temperatures are pleasant or warm in the Central Highlands, and mostly warm or hot in southern Vietnam.
2/ Monsoons in Vietnam in April
The prevalent winds which affect different places in Vietnam in April:
- The Southeasterly Wind, which affects northern Vietnam, causes pleasant temperatures, moist air.
- The Northeasterly Monsoon which come from Tibet and which causes pleasant temperatures in northern Vietnam. The Northeasterly Monsoon is too weak to have any major impact in the other regions of Vietnam than the North.

April is spring in northern Vietnam with mostly dry weather and pleasant temperatures. This is still the trekking and mountain hiking season in the North. But the sun may be strong in some places, be sure to have sun hats, long-sleeved shirts and pants and plenty of drinking water.
April is also fine for trekking tours or mountain hiking trips in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. But the sun can get very strong at mid day and make sure you do not trek or take part in outdoor activities which require much physical exertion when sunlight is strong
2/ Adventure Tours
The lowland of Northern Vietnam including Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh is a good place for general adventure holidays in April.
The Central Coast of Vietnam normally enjoys good weather of a year in April: sun, clouds and pleasant, warm or hot temperatures.
In the Central Highlands, it is dry season. All general adventure tours should bring great experiences. Places on low altitudes may have warm or hot temperatures and it is good to be prepared for this on your tours.
Southern Vietnam is to experience warm or hot temperatures mostly. All adventure tours such as walking, cultural exploration, boat trips... are operable. Avoid adventure activities at mid day. Ensure to drink enough water to avoid dehydration.
3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours
April is still in bird migration season, but many migratory bird species have started a return trip back to their resident places from Vietnam. But the often dry weather in the North, in the Central Highlands and in the South of Vietnam should offer good birding and wildlife spotting tours in Vietnam this month. But keep in mind that the temperatures are warmer in the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam which may suggest skipping birdwatching at mid day.
April is still a good time for birding in the Central Coast of Vietnam: dry weather, perfect temperatures, amazingly wide range of bird species who are most gregarious during this time.

The temperatures in the Central Highlands are just fine for all outdoor activities. But the temperatures may be quite high in southern Vietnam which may have a negative impact on your birding, especially at mid day.

- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh): resident birds, most bird species have come out of nesting and mating time in December.
- Van Long Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh): resident and migratory storks and waterfowls.
- Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh Province : water birds, only some migratory species.
- Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien-Hue Province with representatives of birds between northern and southern Vietnam. This is a precious period for birding at Bach Ma National Park and in the Central Coast of Vietnam.
- Yok Don National in Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam: among the best places in Vietnam for birding, bird watching.
- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : among the best places in Vietnam for birding and bird-watching tours, highly rich in endemic bird species.
- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : this is among the best places in Vietnam for birding and bird watching. This month it may be quite warm at mid day which suggest you have a longer mid day break than normal.
4/ Family Tours
Generally speaking, families should have a great time traveling in Vietnam in April. Ensure to drink enough water if your family is in southern Vietnam given it may get quite hot at times.
5/ Island Holidays
April is a good time to make trips to the islands in Vietnam. The reason is the sea is calm, and sea exploration tours are starting to be operational after the rough sea season in the winter.
6/ Beach Vacations
April is a great time for beach holidays in northern Vietnam and the Central Coast of Vietnam, in the South of the Central Coast of Vietnam, and in southern Vietnam. Expect crowded beaches in the south though.
In Northern Vietnam and North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, Sam Son Beach, Cua Lo Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam are good choices.
And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have mostly dry and sunny weather, and with pleasant temperatures : Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Ninh Chu, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet.
If you travel to Southern Vietnam in April, then try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You should have pleasant temperatures mostly.
