Weather and Climate

Ta Lien Son Mountain is in a region with tropical monsoon climate. Thanks to high altitudes, the temperatures are cool all year round on the mountain.

In the winter months (November – February), the Northeasterly Monsoon causes cold and dry weather. There may be snow or frosts in the period between mid December – mid January. There are plenty of opportunities for blue skies and a sea of clouds on Mount Ta Lien Son during this period.

In March – April it is spring time which is dry and with pleasant temperatures mostly. The rhododendron forests on the mountain slopes help to make the landscape an amazing beautiful picture.

In May – July it is summer time with rain; if there is a typhoon then it is torrential rain with possible landslides. This is not a great time for a trip to Mount Ta Lien Son.

In August – early November, it is autumn with possible typhoons in between August and October. Without a typhoon, it is often very nice weather with mild sunshine and pleasant temperatures. The maple forest offer amazing yellow and red colors. Climbing the Ta Lien Son Mountain during this period, we could encounter amazing “Ocean of Clouds” scenes.

Where to stay

There is a rudimentary wooden hut at 2,400m where travelers stay one night on a trip to the summit of the Ta Lien Son Mountain.

Ho to there there

Lai Chau City is 450km northwest of Hanoi via the expressway between Hanoi – Lao Cai and route 4D. Ta Lien Son Mountain is 30km northwest of Lai Chau City. The road is in fine conditions mostly and cars can travel to Ta Leng Commune.

The road from Ta Leng Commune to the base of the Ta Lien Son Mountain is 10km and is in a very bad shape. For this leg we have to take a trip by motorbike;  if it rains, better allow time for a trek as the trail is too slippery!
