Nhiu Co San Mountain, of which the peak is 2,965m above sea level, is among the highest mountain peaks in Vietnam. The mountain is located in Sang Ma Sao Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province in northwestern Vietnam.

Weather and Climate, Best Time to Visit
There may be typhoons in Northern Vietnam between June and October; during this period it may spoil a trip to the Nhiu Co San Mountain if you happen to travel when the region is under impact of a typhoon. Normal weather patterns by month are as follows:
+ December – January: winter, dry days mostly, cold and possibly snow/frosts between 20-December and 15-January, peach and plum blossoms in January;
+ February – April: spring, dry days mostly, peach and plum blossoms in February, Rhododendron flowers in March-April;
+ May – August: summer, hot (not on high altitudes), strong sunshine, possible typhoons June-August with torrential rain;
+ September – November: autumn, pleasant temperatures, lovely weather mostly except for time under typhoon impact (4-6 typhoons/year in northern Vietnam between June-October), in October – November maple leaves change color to yellow or red which make the landscape amazing;
What to expect on the trekking tour
The first leg is for 2km on a quite flat terrain which travel through streams to the Queen Bee Waterfall (Thac Ong Chua), an amazing beauty amid the wilderness.
Then the trail gets steep inside a dense forest mostly to the mountain hut at 2,300m. This leg of the adventure takes 5-6 hours depending on how fit you are. The two huts can accommodate 60 guests per night.
The trek from the huts to the summit takes 1 hour 30 minutes. The landscape includes mountain slope covered in green grass, a wood of short bamboos and rhododendron forest. The rhododendron flowers found in March-April have red or violet colors which make the whole mountain an amazing world!
The descent to the huts from the summit takes roughly 1 hour and the trek downhill from the huts to the mountain base takes approximately 5 hours. This is a different route with mostly barren hill sides and broad-view scenery. There is no sunshade should it be on a sunny day.
How to get there
From Lao Cai City we have to travel to Den Sang Commune of Bat Xat District first and this leg of the journey is 60-65km depending on the routes you take, either via Sapa or via provincial route 156/158. The route via Sapa is longer but slightly better condition, especially the leg between Sapa and Lao Cai is great mostly.
The second leg of the adventure tour is from Den Sang Commune to Nhiu Co San Village where the trek start and this leg is 8km. The road is in very bad condition and you can choose to travel by motorbike or on foot.
