Chau Doc is a border city in An Giang Province. Chau Doc shares a border with Cambodia and is a leap-off point for travelers between Vietnam and Cambodia. Except for this, the city is not yet visited often by other travelers to Vietnam.

Tourist Attractions, What to see

1/ The Sam Mountain (8km southwest of Chau Doc Market)

The mountain peak is 285m above sea level. The Sam Mountain is itself a tourist attraction in Chau Doc and at the base of the Sam Mountain, there are Mieu Ba Chua Su and Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb which are high-profile attractions for Vietnamese pilgrims and tourists. Besides, there are nearly 200 other shrines and temples at the mountain base and on the mountain slopes. The Sam Mountain is definitely a must-see for every visitor to Chau Doc.

To visit the Sam Mountain, you can hike or take a car trip or take a cable car ride.

2/ Ba Chua Su Temple (Temple of the Lady of the Land)

Ba Chua Su is a local variation of the Vietnamese indigenous cult “Dao Mau” which has certain relation to Thien Y Ana Po Nagar in the Cham spiritual life. The Ba Chua Su Temple is among the most sacred and revered temples in southern Vietnam that all pilgrims here know. People believe the Goddess knows their wishes and helps to bring about favorable results to their wishes.

The annual festival at Mieu Ba Chua Su is on 22-23 of the Fourth Lunar Month. The festival is among the biggest ones in southern Vietnam.

3/ Thoai Ngoc Hau Mausoleum

Thoai Ngoc Hau (Nguyen Van Thoai) was the Chief of the Province (Tran Thu) in 1817 under the Nguyen Dynasty. Thoai Ngoc Hau had great service in making important canals in the Mekong Delta: Thoai Ha Canal (Long Xuyen – Rach Gia), Vinh Te (Chau Doc – Ha Tien, along the Camodian Border),.. along with new roads in the region.

4/ Tay An Pagoda

This is a pagoda with blend of Vietnamese and Indian architectural styles.

5/ Hang Pagoda (1840-1845)

The pagoda is perched on the Sam mountain slope with good views of the plain below.

6/ Fortress

The fortress was originally built by the French as a retreat house. It was turned into a defense fortress during the war and remains to be a military installation nowadays.

7/ Long Son Tu

A lovely Buddhist pagoda near the top of the Sam Mountain which offers great views of the countryside and rice fields below.

How to get there

Chau Doc is 60km northwest of Long Xuyen City, 120km northwest of Can Tho City, 250km west of Ho Chi Minh City.
