    The black bittern (Ixobrychus flavicollis) is a bittern of Old World origin. It is mainly resident, but some northern birds migrate short distances.


    Ardeidae, Ardea: the Latin word ardea meaning "heron".
    The genus name Ixobrychus combines the Ancient Greek ixias, a reed-like plant and brukhomai, to bellow.
    flavicollis: flavi New Latin from flāvus (“yellow”); Modern Latin -collis, "-necked".
