Tham Ma Gradient extends 5km from the Van Chai Commune to the Lung Thau Commune of Dong Van District, Ha Giang Province. The gradient is on a 1,500m elevation above sea level and the landscape is just breathtaking.

The name Tham Ma came from a local habit of selecting a good horse in the past. They would take the horse from the bottom to the top of the gradient and see how the horse’s respiration changed. If the respiration was smooth still, then it was a good horse, else a weak one.
