The bird is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

Pterorhinus is a genus of passerine birds in the laughingthrush family Leiothrichidae.
The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek pteron meaning "feather" with rhinos meaning "nostrils".
Earlier the species of this genus were placed in the genus Garrulax.
