Leiothrix Leiothrichidae Ancient Greek leios meaning "smooth" and thrix meaning "hair".
The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek pteron meaning "feather" with rhinos meaning "nostrils".
The specific epithet perspicillatus is Latin meaning "spectacled".
