The American pipit (Anthus rubescens), formerly known as the buff-bellied pipit, is a small songbird native to North America.

The Wagtails, the pipits and longclaws form the family Motacillidae (Họ Chìa vôi).
Passeriformes, Passerina, passerina: Latin passerinus sparrow-like, (i.e. sparrow-sized) (passer sparrow).
Motacillidae, Motacilla: From Latin motacilla (“wagtail”).
The genus name Anthus is the Latin name for a small bird of grasslands.
The specific rubescens means "reddish", from ruber, "ruddy".
