European stonechat (Saxicola rubicola)
The European stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a subspecies of the common stonechat.
It is found across Europe, as far east as Ukraine and the South Caucasus, and in parts of North Africa.
AdventureGreen spotted this bird on 5-November-2025 in Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam.
The English name stonechat derives from its call, sounding like two stones knocked together.
Saxicola in Latin: saxum, rock + incola, dwelling in.
The stonechats or chats, is a genus of 15 species of small passerine birds restricted to the Old World.
The specific epithet combines the Latin rubus meaning "brambles" with incola.
