Phu Yen Travel Guide

Phu Yen Province is located in the south of the Central Region of Vietnam, north of Khanh Hoa Province and south of Binh Dinh Province. Phu Yen has hilly terrain which offers scenic landscape along the road as we travel through the province. Phu Yen also has pristine sandy beaches that offers unforgettable beach holidays.

1/ The beaches
It is hard to say how many beaches are there in Phu Yen but most of the coast in Phu Yen in between Binh Dinh to Khanh Hoa is sandy beaches. Some of the beaches stretch for a few dozen kilometers and the sea water is turquoise blue. It is ironic that Phu Yen is not visited much by either Vietnamese tourists or foreign visitors. It is possible that transport to Phu Yen is not convenient. Things are changing nowadays for certain and Phu Yen is getting the status it deserves on the Vietnam tourism map.

2/ Cham Tower of Thap Nhan
Phu Yen was once the land of the Champa Kingdom and the legacy includes the Cham Nhan Tower in Tuy Hoa City. The tower was built on a hill at the end of the 11th century and beginning of the 12th century C.E. It was partially damaged during the war 1945-1954.

3/ O Loan Lagoon
An amazing lagoon by the ocean in Tuy An District, 22km north of Tuy Hoa. O Loan is famed for great seafood.

4/ Ganh Da Dia (Stacked Rock Cliffs)
The site is in Tuy An, north of O Loan Lagoon, 35km north of Tuy Hoa City with layers of rock stacked upon one another which looks just amazing.

5/ Xuan Dai Cove
The cove in Song Cau Town is formed by a craggy mountain running into the sea creating a nearly enclosed sea area.

6/ Vung Ro Cove
Lovely sea area formed by a mountain protruding into the sea. Vung Ro was one of the arrival ports of Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea during the war.

7/ Fishing villages
There are several fishing villages with boat mooring area which offers wonderful photos.

8/ Thach Bi Son (Nui Da Bia, Epitaph Mountain, Marker Mountain)
In Hoa Tam Commune, Dong Hoa District, 25km south of Tuy Hoa City. The mountain is 706m in height and has several huge slabs of rock piled upon one another. It is still controversial as to the name of the mountain whether is is an epitaph or a marker between the kingdoms.

Accommodation in Phu Yen
Phu Yen tourism infrastructure has been among the least invested among the coastal provinces in Vietnam. The province is relatively off the tourist path in comparison with the other coastal provinces. Things are changing quickly nowadays though.

There are a couple of luxury hotels and beach resorts in Phu Yen but mostly the properties are cheap hotels and beach guesthouses. There are several mini hotels in Tuy Hoa City with convenient access to the beaches.

How to get to and how to travel around Phu Yen
Phu Yen is 100km south of Quy Nhon, 130km north of Nha Trang City and 530km (or 570km depending on the routes) northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The coastal road is a very scenic one which travels by several deserted beaches and blue sea water.

The daily trains between Hanoi and Saigon stops at Tuy Hoa City, right in the city center. Else you can get to Phu Yen by air with daily flights between Saigon – Tuy Hoa and Hanoi – Tuy Hoa. Tuy Hoa Airport is by the ocean, 6km south of the city center.
