Dalat for long had been inhabited by a number of ethnic minorities, but was introduced to the modern world in the 19th century by Alexandre Yersin, a Swiss-French bacteriologist, who attempted expeditions into the south of the Central Highlands of Vietnam for a few times. Then, the city was planned to have been the capital of Indochina replacing Hanoi by the French Colonial Government. With the French fall at Dien Bien Phu, the plan was not completed, though a few thousand French-styled villas which had been built during the time remain to be part of the elegant charm of the city.

Da Lat has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging around 20-25 Degrees Celsius. It is chilly in early morning and in late afternoon. The rainy season in Da Lat is from May to December and it's the dry season at the other time of the year.

Accommodations in Dalat include newly built luxury hotels, old French villas converted hotels with elegant architecture, mini hotels and family-run hotels amid lovely natural settings.
