Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is located to the west of Quang Binh Province, along the Truong Son Mountain Range. The park's headquarters is 40 km from Dong Hoi City, the capital of Quang Binh Province. Phong Nha is the name of the cave system and Ke Bang is the name of a mountain peak in the park.

Flora

The terrain of Phong Nha – Ke Bang includes karst mountains, buffer zone and flat lands with valleys which are a part of a stretch of the Indochinese Peninsula. There are also systems of underground rivers in the national park. The area of Phong Nha – Ke Bang has a tropical monsoon climate with annual rainfall above 80%, averaged humidity at the national park is always above 80%. All those mentioned factors make up extremely diverse system of flora and fauna at Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

There are 2,951 floral species at the national park. The forest type at the national park include that on limestone, on flat land and in between these two terrains.

Fauna

The National Park of Phong Nha – Ke Bang is rich in biodiversity. There are 1,394 fauna species at the national park of which 83 species are listed in the Red Book of Vietnam for endangered species requiring special protection.

There are 154 animal species of which 46 species are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book with several species critically endangered ones and/or facing extinction.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang is home to 10 primate species of which 3 species are globally critically endangered ones: Hatinh langurs, langurs (Red shanked douc langurs), and iridescent white cheeked gibbon.

There are 303 bird species at Phong Nha – Ke Bang of which 12 species are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book. Some bird species are endemic to the Truong Son Mountain Range annd to Vietnam.

The reptile species at Phong Nha – Ke Bang belong to 151 species of which 20 are in Vietnam’s Red Book.

There are 215 fish species at Phong Nha – Ke Bang of which 5 species are in Vietnam’s Red Book.
