Dryobates is a genus of birds in the woodpecker family Picidae. The species are widely distributed and occur in both Eurasia and the Americas.

Once this species was considered conspecific with the crimson-naped woodpecker, crimson-breasted woodpecker or scarlet-breasted woodpecker (Gõ kiến nhỏ ngực đỏ, Dryobates cathpharius)

2/ Crimson-naped woodpecker, crimson-breasted woodpecker or scarlet-breasted woodpecker (Dryobates cathpharius) 

The genus name Dryobates is from the Greek compound word: 'woodland walker'.
The origin is from δρῦς : drus (genitive δρυός : dryós) meaning woodland and -βάτης : -bátēs meaning walker.
