    Crimson-naped woodpecker, crimson-breasted woodpecker or scarlet-breasted woodpecker (Dryobates cathpharius) 


    The crimson-naped woodpecker (Dryobates cathpharius) is a species of bird in the family Picidae.
    The bird is found in Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar and Nepal.


    Piciformes, Picidae: from Latin picus for woodpeckers.


    The genus name Dryobates is from the Greek compound word: 'woodland walker'.
    The origin is from δρῦς : drus (genitive δρυός : dryós) meaning woodland and -βάτης : -bátēs meaning walker.


    The scientific name cathpharius derives from a Latinized form of the Hindi word katphora, meaning "woodpecker". 
    This term ultimately shares roots with the Ancient Greek word katapherō, meaning "to strike down" or "drive down":
     + Kata- (κατα-): A preposition and prefix meaning "down" or "against.
     + "Pherein (φέρειν): A verb meaning "to carry" or "to strike."
