Poecile is a genus of Old World birds in the tit family, formerly a large genus containing most of the 50 odd species in the family Paridae. In 2013, the genus was split into different genera based on detailed molecular phylogenetic analysis.

Paridae: parus or paru: Latin for tit or chickadee.
Poecile: possibly from Ancient Greek poikilos, meaning: "Variegated," "spotted," "dappled," or "multicolored".
Historical Context: In Ancient Athens, the famous Stoa Poikile (literally "Painted Porch") was a public colonnade where philosophers like Zeno taught, named for the colorful murals inside.
