Columba: Latin columba (“dove, pigeon”). Ancient Greek κόλυμβος (kólumbos, “a diver”), from κολυμβάω (kolumbáō, “dive, plunge headlong, swim”).
Punicea (from Latin puniceus) means scarlet, crimson, or red-purple, deriving from the Greek phoinix (φοῖνιξ) for "purple," referring to the rich dye from murex shells, often associated with Phoenicians and Carthage (the "Punic" people) and also with the pomegranate (Punicum malum).
