Masked booby (Chim điên mặt xanh, Sula dactylatra), also called the masked gannet or the blue-faced booby
The masked booby (Sula dactylatra), also called the masked gannet or the blue-faced booby, is a large seabird of the booby and gannet family, Sulidae.
The English name "booby" was possibly based on the Spanish slang term bobo, meaning "stupid", as these tame birds had a habit of landing on board sailing ships, where they were easily captured and eaten.
Suliformes, Sulidae, or Sula is derived from the Old Norse word sūla, which refers to a gannet or a pillar.
The specific epithet combines the Ancient Greek δάκτυλος (dáktul), meaning 'finger', and the Latin ater, meaning 'black'. "Black fingers" refers to the splayed wingtips in flight.
