Common chiffchaff
(Phylloscopus collybita), or simply the chiffchaff
The common chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), or simply the chiffchaff, is a common and widespread leaf warbler which breeds in open woodlands throughout northern and temperate Europe and the Palearctic.
The bird is a migratory passerine which winters in southern and western Europe, southern Asia and north Africa.
Leaf warblers were formerly included in the Old World warbler family but are now considered to belong to the family Phylloscopidae, introduced in 2006.
The name Phylloscopus combines the Ancient Greek phullon meaning "leaf" and skopos meaning "seeker" (from skopeo, "to watch").
collybita Latin collybista money-changer (> Greek kollubistes money-changer > kollubos small coin); in Normandy the Common Chiffchaff was known as “Compteur d’argent,” from its song resembling the chinking or ringing sound of coins.
