The muntjac, also known as the Southern muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak annamensis), a subspecies of the genus Muntiacus in the deer family (Cervidae).
It is not be confused with the Southern black deer (Cervus unicolor equinus) – a larger and rarer deer subspecies in the same ecosystem.
Taxonomically, the Southern muntjac is considered a subspecies of the Indian red muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak).
