The family and genus name (Glareolidae, Glareola) is a diminutive of Latin glarea, "gravel", referring to a typical nesting habitat.

Lactea is the feminine form of the Latin adjective lacteus, meaning "milky," "milk-white," or "composed of milk". It is derived from lac (milk) and is famously used in the phrase via lactea, meaning "Milky Way" or "milky road".
