The common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), also known as the European kestrel, Eurasian kestrel or Old World kestrel, is a species of predatory bird belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon family Falconidae.

Traits:
- Some with blur or clear moustache;
- Bright yellow cere, feet, and narrow eye-rings;

Falco, Falcon: Hawk, eagle (Late Latin).
The genus name falco derives from Late Latin falx, falcis, a sickle, referring to the wing profile of the bird (or referencing the claws of the bird?).
The species name tinnunculus is Latin for "kestrel" from "tinnulus", "shrill".
