The eastern cattle egret (Ardea coromanda) is a species of heron (family Ardeidae) found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones.

Ardeidae, Ardea: the Latin word ardea meaning "heron".
The genus name Bubulcus is Latin for herdsman, referring to this species' association with cattle. 
"Coromandus, coromanda" is a Latinized name derived from the geographical name for the Coromandel Coast in southeastern India.
