Some taxonomic authorities continue to place this species in the genus Dendrocopos or Picoides.
The species in this genus were previously placed in the genus Dendrocopos.

The grey-capped pygmy woodpecker (Yungipicus canicapillus) is an Asian bird species of the woodpecker family (Picidae).
The bird's range extends from the Himalayas and Manchuria to Southeast Asia.

Traits:
- Gray-capped, black-capped;
- Black-eyestriped;
- Black scapulars;
- Spotted-backed: white spots on the black back;

Similar to Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker but the scapulars.

The Sunda pygmy woodpecker (Yungipicus moluccensis), also known as the Sunda woodpecker, is a species of bird in the family Picidae. 
The bird is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Yungipicus: from the Ancient Greek iunx meaning wryneck; and the Latin picus meaning "woodpecker".
The term moluccensis is Latin and means "from the Moluccas" or "Moluccas", referring to the Moluccas Islands, also known as the Spice Islands, Indonesia. It is a relational adjective derived from the name of the region, used in scientific classifications or historical contexts to indicate origin or association with the Moluccas. 

Yungipicus is a genus of woodpeckers in the family Picidae native to Asia. The species in this genus were previously placed in the genus Dendrocopos.
