    Formerly considered a subspecies of the plain martin.

    The grey-throated martin or Asian plain martin (Riparia chinensis) is a small passerine bird in the swallow family.
    The bird is found from Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Indian subcontinent to southern China, Taiwan, and the northern Philippines.

    Brown-throated martin or brown-throated sand martin (Nhạn họng nâu, Riparia paludicola)
    The specific epithet paludicola is Latin meaning "marsh-dweller" (from palus, paludis meaning "swamp" and -cola meaning "dweller".
    Used to include the grey-throated martin or Asian plain martin[1] (Riparia chinensis).

    Hirundinidae is from the Latin Hirundo for a swallow.
    The genus name Riparia is from the Latin riparius which means "of the riverbank"; it is derived from the Latin ripa "riverbank".

    The sand martin (Riparia riparia), also known as the collared sand martin or common sand martin, and in the Americas as the bank swallow, is a migratory passerine bird in the swallow family Hirundinidae.

    In summer, the bird has is found in  the the whole Holarctic area, from Europe, across Asia to the Pacific Ocean, and throughout North America. 
    It winters in eastern and southern Africa, southern Asia, and South America.
