Leiothrichidae

  • Actinodura

    The barwings are the genus Actinodura of passerine birds in the family Leiothrichidae.
    The name Actinodura is derived from Greek words meaning "ray-like tail" (actinodes and ura).

    1/Spectacled barwing (Khướu đuôi vằn Vân Nam, Actinodura ramsayi)

    2/ Blue-winged minla (Khướu lùn cánh xanh, Actinodura cyanouroptera), also known as the blue-winged siva
     Formerly placed in the genus Minla and also in the monotypic Siva.

    3/ Bar-throated minla or chestnut-tailed minla (Khướu lùn đuôi hung, Actinodura strigula), or bar-throated siva
    Earlier placed in the genus Minla.

    4/ Black-crowned barwing (Khướu vằn đầu đen, Actinodura sodangorum)
     The epithet sodangorum came from the Sodang tribe (also known as Xo Dang) which lives in Ngoc Linh and other areas in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos where black-crowned barwings are distributed.

    5/ Streaked barwing (Khướu vằn gáy xanh, Actinodura souliei)

  • Cutia

    The cutias are the passerine bird genus Cutia in the family Leiothrichidae.
    The name is derived from the Nepali name khatya or khutya for the type species, the Himalayan cutia (C. nipalensis).
    Related to the alcippes and the laughingthrushes.

  • Garrulax

    Garrulax is a genus of passerine birds in the laughingthrush family Leiothrichidae.

    1/ Chinese hwamei or melodious laughingthrush (Họa mi, Garrulax canorus)
    The name "hwamei" comes from its Chinese name which means "painted eyebrow", referring to the distinctive marking around the bird's eyes. 
    The specific epithet is Latin meaning "melodious" (from canere "to sing").

    2/ Black-hooded laughingthrush (Khướu đầu đen, Garrulax milleti)

    3/ White-crested laughingthrush (Khướu đầu trắng, Garrulax leucolophus)
    The scientific name Garrulax leucolophus comes from Latin garrire "to chatter", in reference to its very vocal nature, and from Greek leukos "white" and lophos "crest".

    Heterophasia, the sibias, is a bird genus in the family Leiothrichidae of the order Passeriformes.

    1/ Black-headed sibia (Mi đầu đen, Heterophasia desgodinsi)

    2/ Dark-backed sibia (Mi lưng đen, Heterophasia melanoleuca)

    3/ Long-tailed sibia (Mi đuôi dài, Heterophasia picaoides)

  • Ianthocincla

    Ianthocincla is a genus of passerine birds in the family Leiothrichidae.
    The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek ionthos "young hair" or "down" with the Neo-Latin cinclus "thrush".
    Previously assigned to the genus Garrulax.

    2/ Chestnut-eared laughingthrush (Khướu Kon Ka Kinh, Ianthocincla konkakinhensis)
    originally placed in the genus Garrulax.

  • Laniellus

    Laniellus is a genus of passerine birds in the family Leiothrichidae of the order Passeriformes.
    formerly placed in the genus Crocias.

    Ancient Greek κροκίας (krokías, “a saffron-colored stone”)

    1/ Grey-crowned crocias (Mi Núi Bà, Laniellus langbianis)
    endemic to Vietnam.

  • Leioptila

    The genus Leioptila includes a single species of passerine birds in the family Leiothrichidae.

    Leioptila leio From Ancient Greek λεῖος (leîos, “smooth”). ptila/ptilo feather.

    1/ Rufous-backed sibia (Khướu lùn lưng hung, Leioptila annectens)
    formerly placed in the genus Heterophasia or Minla.

  • Leiothrichidae

    The laughingthrushes are a family, Leiothrichidae, of Old World passerine birds. The family used to be included in the Old World babbler family Timaliidae.

    Leiothrix Leiothrichidae Ancient Greek leios meaning "smooth" and thrix meaning "hair".

  • Leiothrix

    Leiothrix is a genus of passerine birds in the family Leiothrichidae.
    They belong to a clade also containing at least the liocichlas, barwings, minlas and sibias. The sibias are possibly their closest living relatives.
    The genus name combines the Ancient Greek leios meaning "smooth" and thrix meaning "hair".

    The specific epithet lutea is from Latin luteus meaning "saffron-yellow".

    The liocichlas are a group of birds in the genus of the same name, Liocichla, from the family Leiothrichidae.

    The genus Minla is a passerine bird in the family Leiothrichidae of the order Passeriformes.

    1/ Red-tailed Minla (Khướu lùn đuôi đỏ, Minla ignotincta)

  • Pterorhinus

    Pterorhinus is a genus of passerine birds in the laughingthrush family Leiothrichidae.
    The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek pteron meaning "feather" with rhinos meaning "nostrils".
    Earlier the species of this genus were placed in the genus Garrulax.

    2/ Chestnut-capped laughingthrush (Pterorhinus mitratus), also known as the spectacled laughingthrush

    earlier placed in the genus Garrulax.

    5/ Wayanad laughingthrush (Khướu bụng vằn, Pterorhinus delesserti)
    The specific epithet was chosen to honour the French naturalist Adolphe Delessert who had collected specimens from near Kotagiri in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
    Once placed in Crateropus, Dryonastes or Garrulax, Ianthocincla.

    Some resemblance to the rufous-vented laughingthrush (Pterorhinus gularis) of northeastern India which has a yellow throat. 

    Some older treatments considered lumped delesserti with gularis.

     The ranges of delesserti and gularis are widely disjunct but museum specimens can be told apart by the pale lower mandible of delesserti unlike the all dark bill of gularis. 
    The tail is uniformly coloured and is darker than the back in delesserti while that of gularis is pale with rufous outer tail feathers. 
    The chin is yellow in gularis while white in delesserti.

     formerly placed in the genus Garrulax.

     formerly placed in the genus Garrulax.

  • Trochalopteron

    Trochalopteron is a genus of passerine birds in the laughingthrush family Leiothrichidae.
    The name combines the Ancient Greek trokhalos meaning "round" or "bowed" with pteron meaning "wing".

    1/ Red-winged laughingthrush (Khướu cánh đỏ, Trochalopteron formosum) 

    2/ Collared laughingthrush (Khướu đầu đen má xám, Trochalopteron yersini)
    endemic to Vietnam.

    3/ Chestnut-crowned laughingthrush (Khướu đầu hung, Trochalopteron erythrocephalum)

    4/ Red-tailed laughingthrush (Khướu đuôi đỏ, Trochalopteron milnei)
