Anser is a waterfowl genus that includes the grey geese and the white geese in the bird family Anatidae. The genus name comes from the Latin word anser meaning "goose".

The bar-headed goose (Anser indicus) is a goose that breeds in Central Asia in colonies of thousands near mountain lakes and winters in South Asia, as far south as peninsular India.

The bird's distribution is widespread in Europe and Asia some of which often migrate southwards to spend the winter in warmer places, and many of which are resident, even in the north.
