The Co To Island (Quang Ninh) in June

June is summer in the North and in the Central Region of Vietnam, and rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam. It is possible that typhoons start coming into northern Vietnam and in the far-northern mountains there may be flash floods and landslides in June.

1/ Winds Affecting Vietnam in June

The winds which affect Vietnam in June include the southeasterly wind and southwesterly wind. Both of these winds are moist, but for the southwesterly wind when it comes to the Central Coast it becomes dry and hot due to the foehn effect, hence dry and high temperatures in the affected region. The extreme Northwest of Vietnam (Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau) does not have much influence from the foehn effect in June and the temperatures are much more tolerable than in May.

2/ The North of Vietnam

In the North, it sometimes gets warm in the eastern side of the Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai) and in the lowlands (Red River Delta, Halong Bay, Hanoi, Ninh Binh,…) as these regions are sometimes affected by the foehn wind which makes the temperatures reach 35-37oC. But as the southeasterly wind from the sea is often more dominant in June that the temperatures are normally quite tolerable and there are often thunderstorms and torrential rains in the North.

June is when typhoons may start coming into northern Vietnam the affected regions are from the far-northern mountains to the north of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh. Flash floods and landslides are often results of incessant rains during and after the typhoons.

- The Northeast of Vietnam (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen...) enjoys quite pleasant temperatures in June, 20-34oC. It rains quite a lot in this region in June and there are high chances of flash floods and landslides, especially in Ha Giang, Cao Bang and Bac Kan.

- The Northwest of Vietnam has two sub-regions with slightly different weather patterns.
+ The region in between the extreme Northwest and the Northeast (which includes Hoa Binh, Yen Bai and Lao Cai) tend to have higher temperatures than the extreme Northwest. The reason is that this region is sometimes affected by the foehn effect in June. The temperatures are 22-36oC.

Sapa is on high altitude with cool temperatures, 14-26oC mostly and with rains often. Mu Cang Chai often have thunderstorms, 20-27oC.

+ The extreme Northwest of Vietnam (which includes Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau) is not much affected by the foehn wind in June. In stead it is affected by the summer monsoon and occasional northerly wind created by high-pressure cool air-masses moving southwards. The temperatures are 21-31oC. It rains a lot in the extremely Northwest in June and flash floods and landslides are often found in Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau.

Moc Chau Plateau normally enjoys half sunny and half cloudy days, and occasional thunderstorms, 18-27oC.

- The lowlands (including Quang Ninh – Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Hanoi) often receive the northeasterly wind which makes the air pleasant and which cause occasional thunderstorms. Sometimes the lowlands (mostly further inland) are affected by the foehn effect and it gets hot. The temperatures are often 22-34oC and 28-36oC when affected by the foehn wind.

3/The North of the Central Region of Vietnam

This region is dry and tend to have high temperatures due to that this region is influenced by the foehn wind strongly in June. The temperatures are 29-38oC. There are occasional thunderstorms in this region but mostly in Thanh Hoa while it is fairly dry in Nghe An and Ha Tinh.

4/The Central Coast of Vietnam

The whole of the Central Coast (including the North of the Central Region) has basically similar weather pattern in June. But to make it consistent with the other months during which they have different weather patterns, we divide this region into 3 sub-regions:
- North of the Hai Van Pass (Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue) is in strong influence of the foehn wind with high daily temperatures from 28 to above 37oC mostly.

- South of the Hai Van Pass (Da Nang Beach, Quang Nam - Hoi An, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh - Quy Nhon Beach, Phu Yen - Tuy Hoa Beach) is like the Central Coast to the north of the Hai Van Pass under strong influence of the foehn wind with high temperatures from 28-38oC.

It is worth noting that the nightly temperatures tend to be lower than those to the north of the Hai Van Pass and it tends to rain slightly more in the south of the Hai Van Pass compared to the northern part.

- South of the Central Coast ( Khanh Hoa - Nha Trang Beach, Ninh Thuan - Ninh Chu Beach and Binh Thuan - Mui Ne Beach) enjoys more pleasant temperatures than all the other regions in the Central Coast. There are occasional thunderstorms in June and the temperatures are mostly 28-34oC. This region does not often suffer from heat waves or heat strikes. There may be a few days in June that the mid day temperatures in Ninh Thuan are high at 35-36oC but it is not often this high.

5/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam

The Central Highlands are in the rainy season in June with daily short-lived rains, mostly cloudy skies and lovely temperatures, 21-32oC. It does not get warm in the region in June, if any, then the high temperatures are found at mid day mostly for a couple of hours. It is normally chilly in the early morning and afternoon and evening.

While the above temperature range is for the whole region, it is often between 21-29oC in Pleiku (Gia Lai) and it is higher a bit in Kon Tum and Dak Lak. The lowest temperatures are found in Lam Dong (19-28oC) thanks to high altitude. The temperatures in Da Lat (Lam Dong) are 14-25oC with quite a lot of rains in June.

6/The South of Vietnam

The weather in South Vietnam in June is quite similar to that in May. The South of Vietnam is in the rainy season in June, often with clouds or mild sunshine. And the temperatures are stable and basically similar all over the region, 26-34oC. There are daily rains which make streets in cities temporarily flooded.

The Con Dao Islands and Phu Quoc Islands are both in the rainy season in June with occasional thunderstorms, cloudy skies, 28-31oC.
