Xuan Thuy National Park is in Giao Thuy District, Nam Dinh Province. The national park was the first one in Vietnam registered to the List of Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance by the UNESCO. The national park covers an area of 12,000 hectares.

Geography

The Xuan Thuy National Park includes mudflats, salt marshes, sand dunes and mangrove forest on the estuary of the Red River where the river discharges its water into the East Sea. The national park has a relatively warm and dry winter from October through March with temperatures mostly between 14-22oC.

Flora and Fauna

The flora at the national park includes mangrove (kandelia candel , sea holly, mangrove apple ), seagrasses (disappeared in 2000), Cassuarina forest,…

The fauna at the national park includes a wide variety of fish species and especially birds.

Thanks to the warm winter, mangrove forest and abundant food that the Xuan Thuy National Park is an extremely important natural habitat as well as a stopover place for migratory bird species. The best time for birding or bird watching at the National Park is from October through March, during this time there are over 200 bird species here which include native birds and visiting birds which come here to get away from their usual cold-winter environment.

In the summer months there are several native birds like yellow-breasted Bunting, Fairy Pitta, different kingfisher species...

How to get to the Xuan Thuy National Park

The Xuan Thuy National Park is 60km south of Nam Dinh City, 90km from Ninh Binh City and 160km southeast of Hanoi. The road from Nam Dinh City to the national park is small but in fair conditions.
