Vietnam Weather in January 2020

January is about to be the end of the winter and about to be the beginning of spring in the North of Vietnam, is about to be the end of the rainy season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, the the dry season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam. Depending on each year, the temperatures in the North may be among the coldest times of the year. And it is often cold in the Central Coast, very pleasant in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.

 January is a month that the Northeasterly Monsoon is strong and the Con Dao Islands often have clouds, strong winds and rough sea. January is not an ideal time for snorkeling, scuba-diving or boating on the Con Dao Islands. Those to plan to travel to and from Con Dao by boat should be prepared with rough sea.

The Phu Quoc Island often has a great weather in January: sun, pleasant temperatures.

1/ First Week January 2020

January 2020 begun with a new spell of cold Northeasterly Monsoon hitting the North and the Central Coast of Vietnam causing clouds and some light rain in the North, rains in the Central Coast. It got cool all over the North in the first half of the first week of January. The temperatures then turned pleasant for the second half of the first week in the North with mostly dry days.

The Central Coast had less rain in the second half of the first week and the South of the Central Coast (Nha Trang, Phan Rang an Phan Thiet Mui Ne) enjoyed lovely sun during this time.

The South of Vietnam and the Central Highlands had mostly sun and clouds in the first week of January 2020.

2/ Second Week January 2020

The second week started with the sun coming out in most of northern Vietnam. There were still isolated rains but it was mostly dry days with hazy sun and clouds. The weather and temperatures were perfect for adventure tours, trekking tours, bike tours and family adventures.

There was less rain and more sun in most of the Central Coast in the first half of the week. It was mostly sun and clouds in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.

There was a new spell of the cold Northeasterly Monsoon hitting the North of Vietnam in the middle of the second week which made the temperatures drop substantially in the region and which caused some isolated rains all over the North and north of the Hai Van Pass in the Central Coast.

For the latter half of the second week, it was mostly sun and pleasant temperatures in all over Vietnam. This period was ideal for all kinds of travel in the country, be it adventure tours or family vacations.

3/ Third Week January 2020

The third week of January 2020 started with a new spell of cold Northeasterly Wind blowing through northern Vietnam. The wind was later strengthened by another spell of cold wind which made temperatures in the North drop and which caused cloudy weather in most of northern Vietnam save the extreme Northwest where sunshine prevailed. There were isolated rains in the North and the air was mostly damp.

With the influence of the spells of cold wind, the Central Coast had some days with isolated rains and clouds but mostly it was sunny weather. The region is entering the dry season for certain and there is no doubt this was the best time to have holidays here.

The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam enjoyed lovely weather with some sun, some clouds and pleasant temperatures.

4/ Fourth Week January 2020

The middle of fourth week was marked by a very strong spell of cold Northeasterly Wind and unusual weather symptoms. There were torrential rains and hails in several areas in northern Vietnam and streets in Hanoi were even flooded. There were lightnings and thunders which are found normally in the summer only!

On the first day of the Lunar New Year (25January2020), the Mekong Delta was covered in thick fog! There were hails in several provinces in the North of Vietnam: Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Hanoi, Ninh Binh,…

For the rest of the month the North had mostly cold and dry weather, some isolated rains; the Central Coast and Central Highlands had some rains; the south of the Central Coast (Nha Trang to Mui Ne) and the South of Vietnam had sun and warm temperatures. The weather was perfect for beach holidays in the coastal region from Nha Trang to Vung Tau and on the offshore islands (Con Dao, Phu Quoc)...
